Inpatient vs. Outpatient: Addiction Treatment Resources in Idaho

Nobody plans their first call for help. When it comes, it helps to know what the words mean and who to call. Here's a plain-language guide to treatment in the Treasure Valley and across Idaho.

If it's an emergency, call 911. For a crisis, call or text 988. Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be dangerous, so don't detox alone.

Levels of care, explained

Level What it is Who it's for
Detox Short stay to get through withdrawal safely, medically or socially supported Anyone physically dependent
Inpatient / Residential Live on site, usually 28–90 days, with daily therapy and groups People who need a full break from their environment
PHP (partial hospitalization) Treatment most of the day, home at night A step down from residential
IOP (intensive outpatient) About 3 hours a day, several days a week People working or living at home
Outpatient Weekly counseling or groups Ongoing support
Sober living Substance-free housing with accountability. Not treatment. After or alongside treatment (our guide)

After treatment

Treatment ends. Recovery doesn't. For a lot of men I know, what kept them sober was the next 6 to 12 months: a safe place to live, meetings, and other men holding them accountable. That's why SGLiving exists.
